Welcome to Galena’s Bicentennial year in 2026, a once-in-a-lifetime celebration marking 200 years since the people of the “Village on Fever River” voted in December 1826 to adopt the name Galena, honoring the lead ore that brought prosperity and growth to this historic Illinois town. Nestled in the rolling hills of Jo Daviess County, Galena invites visitors to explore its beautifully preserved 19th-century architecture, vibrant Main Street, museums, outdoor adventures, and unique local businesses, with experiences that embody the spirit that being original never gets old. Throughout 2026, the city will host a yearlong calendar of events, community gatherings, and heritage moments to honor Galena’s rich past and bright future.

A Historic Year for America and the Roads That Shaped It

2026 isn't just a big year for Galena; it's a milestone across the nation. As we honor 200 years of Galena history, communities and travelers coast to coast are also celebrating key anniversaries in American heritage, exploration, and connectivity.

America 250: Reflecting on 250 Years of the Nation

Across the United States, 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, commemorated through the national America 250 initiative. This nonpartisan effort encourages communities, organizations, and individuals to reflect on our shared past, recognize contributions from all corners of the nation, and look ahead to the future we’re building together. America 250 supports storytelling, volunteerism, and educational programs that celebrate the American spirit and invites everyone to participate in this once-in-a-lifetime milestone.

Route 20 Anniversary: 100 Years of America’s Longest Highway

2026 also marks the centennial of U.S. Route 20, the longest highway in the United States, stretching over 3,300 miles from Boston, Massachusetts, to Newport, Oregon. Historic Route 20 is celebrated for connecting communities big and small, threading together breathtaking landscapes and stories of American expansion. This anniversary highlights not just the road itself but the people, businesses, and places along its path, a narrative that echoes the spirit of discovery and connection at the heart of Galena’s own Bicentennial celebration.

Route 66 Centennial: Celebrating the Spirit of the American Road Trip

In 2026, another iconic piece of American travel history turns 100 years old: Route 66, the legendary highway that once connected Chicago to Santa Monica and earned the nickname “The Mother Road.” Nationwide communities and organizations are commemorating this centennial with celebrations, public art, storytelling projects, and interpretive experiences designed to honor the road’s legacy of freedom, exploration, and connection.

While Galena is not located directly on Route 66, the area proudly embraces the spirit of the American road trip that the Mother Road represents. As Route 66 celebrates its centennial, Galena invites travelers to venture just beyond the iconic highway to discover a destination rich in history and scenic beauty. A true drive-to destination, Galena rewards road-trippers with winding backroads, sweeping views of the Driftless Region, and a downtown filled with preserved 19th-century architecture, locally owned shops, and unique attractions.

A Legacy of Firsts: Galena’s Historic Landmarks

Galena’s story is rooted in innovation, community, and resilience. As we celebrate 200 years in 2026, it’s worth honoring the institutions and places that helped shape not only this region, but the broader narrative of Illinois history. From hospitality and journalism to firefighting and early settlement, these historic firsts are milestones in a town that has always valued originality.

DeSoto House Hotel — Illinois’ Oldest Continuously Operating Hotel

Founded in 1855, the DeSoto House Hotel holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating hotel in Illinois. For generations, presidents, pioneers, and everyday travelers have stayed here, drawn by Galena’s rich past and warm hospitality. Its historic charm offers guests a direct connection to the town’s 19th-century roots.

Galena Fire Department — The Oldest in Illinois

Serving the community with bravery and dedication, the Galena Fire Department holds the distinction of being the oldest fire department in Illinois, with roots dating back to 1830 when the Galena Fire Protection District was established to meet the needs of a growing river town. The modern Galena Fire Department was formally created in 1935, continuing a long tradition of protecting residents, businesses, and visitors through generations of change.

At one time, the City of Galena was protected by five separate fire companies, a testament to the town’s size and importance during its 19th-century boom. Today, visitors can still see the historic Liberty Engine Company building at the crossroads of Bench and Washington Streets. Inside is an 1855 Agnew Pumper, a remarkable piece of firefighting history once pulled by horse or sheer manpower; an especially impressive feat given Galena’s famously steep, rolling hills.

Dowling House — Galena’s Oldest Home

Step back in time at the Dowling House, built circa 1826 by Irish immigrant John Dowling and recognized as Galena’s oldest surviving residence. Today, this historic home offers visitors a rare glimpse into early pioneer life and the architectural beginnings of the community with guided tours from May through October.

Galena Post Office — A Piece of Downtown History

The historic Galena Post Office is the second-oldest continuously owned and operated post office in the United States, completed in 1858 at a time when Galena was a major river and mining hub. Designed in the Renaissance Revival style by Ammi B. Young, the building represents the first standardized architectural style adopted by the federal government nationwide. The first floor served as the Post Office, while the second floor functioned as the Customhouse, underscoring Galena’s importance in 19th-century commerce. Construction was overseen by Ely S. Parker, one of the most influential Indigenous leaders in U.S. history. Built with Nauvoo limestone from the same quarries used for the Mormon Temple, the building remains as solid today as when it was completed.
