Stroll through the twinkling historic downtown and enjoy one of Galena’s most enchanting winter traditions.

Night of the Luminaria & Living Windows is a magical winter-evening event set in downtown Galena. The streets, sidewalks, steps, and business windows all glow with thousands of candle-lit luminaries and animated holiday-inspired displays. More than 5,000 luminaries light up the town from Main Street to the hills overlooking Grant Park; the effect is one of warmth, sparkle, and holiday cheer. The Living Windows portion features store windows along Main Street that come alive with holiday-themed animations and displays (for a few hours earlier in the evening).
If you like festive lights, a cozy winter stroll, charming historic architecture, and a mix of shopping and ambiance, this is a “must-do” winter evening visit.

To help keep Main Street open and walkable for all during the festivities, vehicle parking on Main Street will not be permitted after 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 13. Living Windows takes place from 4–7 p.m., followed by Luminaria from 5–9 p.m.
To accommodate those who would typically park along Main Street, free parking will be available at Recreation Park (Galena Recreation Park, 1721 Field St, Galena, IL 61036), where approximately 220 parking spaces are open to the public.
Free Shuttle Service:
Jo Daviess Transit will operate four continuous shuttle buses between Recreation Park and Green Street Plaza from 12–9 p.m. This complimentary service is available to all visitors and residents, providing a convenient way to access the downtown area without the need to search for parking.Signage & Wayfinding:
Directional signage will be placed throughout Recreation Park to guide visitors to the shuttle boarding area. Additional signage along Main Street will help direct motorists to the designated parking and shuttle lot.Traffic & Pedestrian Flow:
While Main Street and side streets will remain open to traffic, barricades, caution tape, and clear signage will be used to create wider pedestrian walkways along both sides of the street. This setup helps maintain safety and visibility during peak foot traffic, ensuring visitors can comfortably enjoy the Living Windows displays and Luminaria glow.Pro Tip:
If you’re staying in or near downtown, consider walking to the event to fully enjoy the festive ambiance and avoid traffic congestion. -
