Explore Galena's history and meet the spirits of Ulysses and Julia Grant in a hologram that welcomes guests to the museum where true national treasures, such as the "Peace in Union" painting, "General Grant on the Battlefield" painting, Flag from the Vicksburg Siege, a topographical map of Jo Daviess County, mining and steamboating are presented. The museum is located in an 1858 Italianate mansion built as a private residence by Galena merchant Daniel Barrows. The Museum features over 6,000 square feet of exhibit space on lead mining in the northwest region, the driftless area, Grant’s leather store, the Port of Galena: 1858. Discover souvenirs, gifts, books of historical nature in the museum gift and bookshop.

Admission

$10 - Adults $9 - Seniors 65+ $8 - Age 10-18 Free - Age 9 and under $22 - Parents and any number of dependent children, including college-aged.

Historic Reenactors - Every Sat. from July 27 through October 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. Seeing someone walk down Galena's Main Street in 19th-century garb will make you do a double-take. But when they totally commit to their characters, you get a unique glimpse of what life was like during a different time. Have a chat with one of the nine civil war generals who used to call Galena home. You may even be lucky enough to bump into Ulysses S. Grant himself! Meet women who defied some of the laws and social standards of the 1800s to achieve their goals and dreams in the town of Galena and other key players in the history of Galena Country!
