Apple River is located on historic Stagecoach Trail, which once connected Chicago and Galena. Established by the Illinois Central Railroad in 1854, the village is surrounded by thriving dairy farms and fields planted with soy beans and corn. It truly reflects the atmosphere and charm of rural Illinois. Apple River is also home to Apple River Canyon State Park and several 19th century gems at Oak Hill Farms, including a one-room school house, a white steeple church and a re-created Country General Store.

How far is Apple River Canyon State Park?

The 297-acre Apple River Canyon State Park is located six miles north of Apple River and about a thirty minute drive from Galena. Throughout the year, people flock to the park to fish, camp, picnic, and hike. Five trails wind through the woods for several miles within the park that make it the perfect location to nature watch. It is also where the historic town of Millville, listed on the national Historic Register – is located. Millville had many buildings swept away after a devastating flood in 1892 washed out the dam.
