Virtual Event: Talking Leaves - Native American Storytelling and Poetry

This presentation will start with an overview of Native American oral traditions and the importance of storytelling, focusing on the different types of stories and poems--spiritual, cosmogonic, memorial, etc--told by a handful of the 570+ federally recognized tribes. It will discuss both oral tradition and the importance of the storyteller figure historically, and we will together discuss together the key ideas and themes in a few poems and stories shared from different tribes, including identity, resilience, resistance, and balance. Dr. Susan Stone teaches a wide variety of courses at Loras College including 19th-century American literature and culture, Gender Studies, Native American and African American Studies, Writing, and other areas.
