Today the Apple River Fort State Historic Site, a Black Hawk War landmark, includes both an interpretive center and a reconstruction of the long-vanished fort, competed in 1997 and modeled upon findings of a 1995 archaeological dig. Black Hawk and his warriors attacked the fort on June 24, 1832. His story and stories of the early settlers are told. On weekends from May through October, the fort comes to life through living history activities and special events that present stories both of the settlers within the walls and the attacking Sac and Meskwaki Indians. Open year-round Wednesday through Sunday.
