Not only does JDCF’s Casper Bluff property command some of the best views of the Mississippi River and its backwater sloughs, highly significant archeological resources can also be found at the 85-acre site. Home to a portion of the Aiken Mound group, 51 burial mounds, including the only know exiting Thunderbird effigy mound in Illinois, occupy portions of the bluff, many of which can be clearly seen from the mowed hiking trails. Thanks to the generosity of the Galena Rotary Club, a picnic shelter is now available for public use at the site. An information kiosk guides visitors to the best views of the river and mounds.
To reach Casper Bluff from downtown Galena, take Blackjack road towards Chestnut Mountain. Follow for 3.9 miles. Turn right onto W Hart John Road. Continue for 1 mile to Pilot Knob Road. Turn right and look for the red and yellow sign.
