Celebrating Peace in Union
We’re proud to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Peace in Union with Galena and the rest of the United States in April of this year. Our commemoration host, the Galena-Jo Daviess County Historical Society at the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum, houses the famous painting “Peace in Union” by Thomas Nast depicting General Ulysses S. Grant formally accepting the surrender of General Robert E. Lee in the Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia 1865. Galena, IL was home to nine Civil War generals, including Ulysses S. Grant and four are represented in the painting.
Head to the Galena & U.S. Grant Museum on April 17 at 10:15 am for a dedication of the commemorative stamps celebrating the sesquicentennial!
We’re celebrating with a series of programs, exhibits and tours from April 9-19, 2015.
